Not a single space left for supplies or people. A full schedule with more jobs coming in than was ever thought humanly possible. This is the stuff that contractors dream of.

Living the dream is Devecka Custom Construction. A family-based business, Devecka specializes in drywall, ceiling and door construction. Richard Devecka, Sr., Richard Devecka, Jr., and Dennis Devecka are all involved in running the business - from customer relations and estimating to sales and onsite job supervision. Busting at the seams, the home-based office where they had spent the past 25 years could no longer maintain their rapid growth. With a growing office staff, the business moved into an office park setting.

But the company's building was not the only thing that Devecka Custom Construction had outgrown. Their accounting system also was not suited to keep pace with growth.

With a goal of increasing both business and job size, the Deveckas found that their previous accounting system was not handling basic accounting requirements, let alone all of the information and reporting that they needed. After exploring many of the various accounting programs available, their search for an all-encompassing system led them to Foundation Software and FOUNDATION For Windows.

The Challenge

According to Marsha Friedberg, Office Manager and Bookkeeper at Devecka Construction, their previous accounting system was hard to work with and unyielding. AIA reporting was just one area of frustration. "When it came time to do AIA reporting, the system could not calculate it," she said. "And even if we did the calculations manually, there was no form to print from."

But the biggest challenge, Friedberg said, was the vendor's lack of support. It often took days before someone would return her call or solve a problem, and then one day the phones went unanswered. "We had to find out from one of their former employees that the company had gone out of business," Friedberg said. "We ended up hiring him as a consultant because we needed help with our year-end reporting."

Motivated to switch, the company began to look for a reliable system that would be easy to use and meet all their needs, including necessary union accounting and reporting.

After a product demonstration on FOUNDATION from "a salesman who could answer all our questions," Devecka Construction was convinced that they had found the right job cost accounting package for their growing company.

Aside from ongoing support, another issue that was extremely important to the company was accessibility of training. Because of the variety of training options available from Foundation, Devecka was able to select the method that best suited their situation: on-site training. Friedberg prepared for training by entering information for vendors, employees, and jobs. This advance preparation laid the groundwork for efficient use of training time. Following training from an experienced trainer who was both knowledgeable and thorough, Devecka Custom Construction was up and running in no time at all.

When asked about improved daily operations since implementing FOUNDATION, Friedberg stated, "Accounting tasks are easier, quicker and more accurate. Reports are thorough, which aids in making smarter job and business decisions."
